DECK THE HALLS
We all have hallways in our homes but don’t think much about decorating them. That’s the place where we hang our family photo collection, usually, in an uninspiring way! Try to think “outside the box” and see how creative you can be to make your hallway another inviting area of your home.
Here are some ideas:
A hallway usually has lots of doors, so make them interesting! This can be done by painting them a neat color, maybe a rusty red, a dramatic black, or some other color that will compliment your surroundings. If you don’t want to go quite that dramatic just paint an accent stripe around the inside panels of each door adding subtle color.

If you have one door that could be used a s a focal point and it opens into an inviting space consider changing it out to a French door to add interest.
Stenciled wording can be applied to each door to delineate their purpose such as Laundry Room, Pantry, etc. adding instant character!
Use an interesting light fixture in the hallway…. possibly, a hanging light that would normally be used outside. It’s unexpected and adds interest. To make the hallway cozy add a dimmer to the light. This is especially a nice touch if this hallway is used by guests from time to time.
If you want to keep those family photos on display think of a creative way to display them. Consider taking your favorites and having them printed in black and white. Use a neutral mat and simple black frame for each photo then hang them in a series for impact, or install a picture ledge and lean them against the wall.
Anything repetitive is interesting. A series of simple mirrors would also be a nice touch for a hallway.
Do something creative with the floor if possible. Hallways usually create a bowling alley effect….an interesting rug, stenciled or painted floor will really make a statement.
Since the holidays are approaching, it’s truly the perfect time to “Deck The Halls” by adding a simple wreath to each door and maybe a festive rug to the floor bringing the holiday spirit into an unexpected area. Get busy “Decking those Halls”!
The alphabet wreath shown above would be an unexpected twist to the traditional Christmas wreath. Another unique and whimsical possibility for decorating hallway doors would be using Christmas stockings that could be personalized for each family member. Both of these options are available through Ballard Designs.
